Son of actress Renee Saint-Cyr, Lautner became an assistant director in French films in the early '50s, and after directing shorts helmed his first feature in 1958. A popular director of comedies and romantic dramas, Lautner's notable films include Les Barbouzes (aka The Great Spy Chase), La Route De Salina (aka Road to Salina), Les Seins De Glace (aka Icy Breasts), and La Cage Aux Folles 3: The Wedding. He mostly retired from directing in the mid-1990s, helming only a couple of television episodes in his later years. Lautner died in 2013 at age 87.
