American screenwriter and producer Gene Markey worked as a writer of novels and short stories before joining the Hollywood film industry in 1928. There he wrote and co-wrote original stories and screenplays for many light dramas and romances during the 1930s. Later he produced several films for Fox. During WW I he was an infantry lieutenant, and in WW II he served as a Naval officer; when he finally retired from the military, he was a rear admiral. In Hollywood, Markey was a popular ladies man and was married to several prominent stars including Joan Bennett, Hedy LaMarr, and Myrna Loy.
