Dutch filmmaker Fons Rademakers was one of his country's leading directors of the '60s and '70s. Born in Roosendael, Holland, he was educated at the Amsterdam Academy of Dramatic Art and debuted professionally as a stage actor and director. Rademakers entered films assisting such directors as Renoir and De Sica until making his own directorial debut in 1958. His films, such as The Knife (1960), are characterized by their psychological complexity. His 1959 film Village on the River was nominated for an Academy award and his 1986 film The Assault earned an Academy award for Best Foreign Film. In addition to directing, Rademakers also occasionally produced films. He was married to Lili Rademakers.
