Elsa Chauvel began her career as an actress in the 1900s. In 1926, she starred in Charles Chauvel's second movie, Greenhide, and then became his wife, co-writer, producer and director for all seven of his subsequent films. Their body of work helped create the foundations for Australian National Cinema, which focused on presenting the landscape and travails of the pioneers, and upon creating the mythology of the Australian experience.
