Russian writer/director Eldar Ryazanov scored enormous success in his homeland with a string of satirical and romantic comedies in the '60s and '70s (usually co-scripted by Emil Braginsky). His attempt to deal with more serious material in the '80s and '90s proved to be far less fruitful and his output became relatively scarce.
