Bergholm is a director and screenwriter who has worked in Finnish feature films, theater, and television. She studied History of Art and Drama at Helsinki University from 1963-1965; she then graduated from the Finnish Theater Institute in 1965. Her first professional job was as a drama director with Finnish Commercial Television. Bergholm then became an artistic director of the Helsinki Student Theater while simultaneously penning her first screenplays. One of her first, Punahilkka (1969), became quite famous in Finland. She made her directorial debut in 1972 with Marja Pieni, which won the Finnish State Award and an award at the Karlovy Vary film festival. From 1978 to 1982, Bergholm returned to television where she began directing dramas and films; her work there is credited for bringing back Finnish drama. She won a three year scholarship in 1982 allowing the director to return to feature film. Since then she has continued to work in both television and cinema.
