Biography by AllMovie

A stock company comedian who had appeared opposite the likes of Julia Marlowe, Lillian Russell, E. H. Sothern, and DeWolf Hopper, Edmund Lawrence's screen career was spent mainly as a director and occasional scriptwriter. Hired to helm programmers for Fox, Lawrence, as correspondence between William Fox and his West Coast studio manager Sol M. Wurtzel indicates, singularly failed to keep costs down and was discharged. He returned to direct a few potboilers near the close of the silent era but his first attempt with sound, the New York-lensed House of Secrets (1929), was a distinct failure. His death, in 1944, was reportedly a suicide.
