Biography by AllMovie

German filmmaker Dmitri Buchowetzki was born and raised in Russia. After studying law for a time, he began making films in Russia. Following the October Revolution, Buchowetzki emigrated to Germany and there became a very successful filmmaker. He directed a series of shorts featuring Max Linder in 1919 and then switched to costume dramas. Pola Negri frequently starred in these films. When the exotic actress moved to Hollywood, she asked that Buchowetzki be allowed to accompany her and direct her films. He arrived in Hollywood in 1924, touted as a great filmmaker; unfortunately, his American films never did make much impact, and studio heads were unimpressed. By the time sound was invented, Buchowetzki was only allowed to direct German versions of popular Hollywood films.
