Spanish director Carlos Benpar's passion for cinema began early on; as a child, he was an avid promoter of film societies. When not seeing or discussing movies, Benpar was making amateur shorts himself. As a young man, Benpar studied business, but in 1968, he began directing short films. Benpar turned to features in the early '70s, but difficulties with financing and production prevented many from finding an audience. His first film, Soplo de Esplendor/Moments of Grandeur, was completed but never actually released. Those that were released seldom received wide distribution; El Procedimiento/The Procedure was completed in 1977, but not released until it was re-edited in 1984. Benpar's most popular films in Spain were El Jovencito Dracula/Little Dracula (1976) and Captáin Escalaborns (1990). When not making films and penning screenplays, Benpar writes about movies and is particularly well educated in American cinema, having published an insightful book on Nicholas Ray in 1986.
