Yet another member of the legendary Fred Karno troupe, British-born Billy Armstrong joined former Karno colleague Charles Chaplin at Essanay in 1915. Very visible in scores of Chaplin comedies, Armstrong played the poet in The Tramp (1915), the thief in The Park (1915), a holiday-maker in By the Sea (1915), and one of the three shanghaied sailors in Shanghaied (1915). Armstrong later appeared for Mack Sennett, in David Horsley's "Cub Comedies," opposite a young Oliver Hardy in L-Ko two-reelers. and in Fox's "Sunshine Comedies."
