A former bank accountant, film journalist, and playwright, Portuguese director Armando de Miranda ranked as one of his country's most successful filmmakers during the 1940s. Capas Negras/Black Mantles remains his most famous movie; its theme song, "Coimbra"/"April in Portugal", was an international hit. De Miranda made his first film, Pao Nosso/Our Daily Bread, in 1940. He emigrated to Brazil in the early '50s, returning to Portugal only once to make O Cantor e A Bailarina/The Singer and the Dancer in 1959. He made his last film, A Montanha dos Sete Ecos/Mountain of Seven Echoes, in 1963.
