A New York native who has worked on such Spike Lee productions as Do the Right Thing (1989) and Mo' Better Blues (1990), Abdul Malik Abbot moved to editing and directing in the latter 1990s, gaining increased notoriety through his music video work with such artists as Will Smith and Jay-Z. Later taking the helm for an award-winning video by singer Abbey Lincoln, Abbot made his feature debut in 2001 with State Property.
