- Started his career writing radio shows for Dinah Shore, George Burns, Henry Morgan and Milton Berle, among others before moving to TV in the early 1950's.
- Produced popular CBS family comedy series The Andy Griffith Show from 1960 to 1965 and also wrote and directed several episodes.
- Was a court-appointed special advocate representing abused and abandoned children in Juvenile Court.
- Received the Writers Guild of America, West's Valentine Davies Award for public service in 2003 for his work on behalf of abused children.
- Established the Aaron Ruben Scholarship Fund and was named Volunteer of the Year by the Los Angeles Child Advocate's Office in 1999.
