American producer Sol C. Siegel first worked as a reporter for The New York Herald Tribune and later as a sales executive for a recording company. He came to Hollywood in 1934 where he helped four production studios merge to become Republic Pictures. Siegel stayed with Republic as an executive producer where he oversaw many Westerns starring Gene Autry and John Wayne. He left the company in 1940 to work with Paramount, and in '47 moved again to 20th Century Fox where he became known for producing commercially, and sometimes critically, successful films. He joined MGM in 1956, and within two years was appointed vice president in charge of production. He left MGM in the early '60s to become an independent producer.
