Synopsis by Hal Erickson

This two-reel potboiler from Mack Sennett's comedy factory is motivated by the antics of a lovestruck schoolteacher. The hero is in love with one of his older students, all the while being loved by another, less attractive pupil. Romance bows to slapstick when the school board decides to pay a visit to the classroom, whereupon they discover the schoolteacher's sweetheart in an embarrassing state of undress. As was the case with most Sennett farces of the era, the whole thing ends with a wacky chase. Variety gave The Village Chestnut a passing grade, if only because the film avoided the "funny animals" that had been inflicted upon previous Sennett comedies.
