Synopsis by Mark Deming

In this quirky comedy from Hong Kong filmmaker Ivy Ho, Loy (Jacky Cheung) is a sad sack in his early 40s who is living with his mother after being dumped by his girlfriend and works in the family business selling air conditioners. Just down the street, Oi-lin (Tang Wei) sells bathroom fixtures for her uncle and is in a deep funk over her boyfriend, who is serving time in prison. Loy's overbearing widowed mother (Paw Hee-ching) wants him to settle down and start a family, so she sets him up on a blind date with Oi-lin, even though she's considerably younger than him and not interested in dating. Since Loy's mother tags along for his date, things don't seem especially promising, but he and Oi-lin discover a common ground in their shared discomfort over the date and an interest in detective novels. But can they build a romance around their neuroses and oddball enthusiasms? And can Loy's mother find happiness with her determined and much put-upon suitor (Danny Lee)? Yue Man Xuan Ni Shi (aka Crossing Hennessy) received its North American premiere at the 2010 Seattle International Film Festival.
