Synopsis by Sandra Brennan

Without undue melodrama, this Thai war drama, set during the Japanese occupation of the 1940s, chronicles the tragedy that results when a young beauty is unable to make up her mind. The story begins in 1944 as Ungsumalin quietly witnesses the funeral of her husband, the Japanese officer Kobori. An Allied bombing attack forces all attendees to flee and the story falls backward five years to see Ungsumalin bidding her beau Vanus good luck as he prepares to go to England. One year later, the Japanese are controlling the country. The girl is swimming in the Chaporaya river one day when Captain Kobori sees her and falls in love. She sees him and despises him. Still a courtship ensues. She uses him to serve the underground movement while waiting for Vanus. But things change when her father insists that she marry Kobori for political reasons. Kobori promises not to touch her, a vow he breaks after the wedding.
