A type of film which is generally about human relationships and larger dramatic issues but involves a fair amount of adventure and is set in an exotic locale. The issues of the film are thrown into sharper relief by the characters' isolation from normal civilization. In Apocalypse Now, Mosquito Coast or Werner Herzog films, the protagonists encounter many obstacles typical of adventure film, but these "adventures" serve to make a point about the characters' obsessions and flaws rather than merely to thrill.
