Synopsis by Jason Buchanan
Filmmaker Melody Gilbert documents the experiences of three children suffering from a rare genetic defect known as Congenital Insensitivity to Pain (CIPA) and the parents who struggle to monitor their every move in hopes of preventing a tragedy. Ten year-old Jamilah from Germany, three year-old Gabby from the United States, and seven year-old Miriam from Norway all suffer from CIPA. When you're afflicted with CIPA, even the most minor injuries can pose a life-threatening danger. Not only is it an enormous challenge for the children who remain tragically unaware of the dangers they face, but to the parents who realize that pain helps us all to realize when something is wrong as well. In this documentary Gilbert explores this tragic condition from both perspectives to offer an illuminating look at a condition many people never even knew existed.
