Synopsis by Janiss Garza

Irving Lawrence (Joseph Kilgour) owns some of the most decrepit tenements in town and is an all-around bad guy. He won't cooperate with the efforts of his wife, Barbara (Virginia Pearson), to help the poor and sees other women behind her back. Muriel, one of his cast-offs (Naomi Childers), meets and marries Barbara's brother, Payne (Charles Wellesley). Lawrence makes trouble for Muriel and fabricates a scandal involving his kindly brother Schuyler (Robert Gaillard) and Barbara. Then, while Barbara is having a party for the tenement children, a fire breaks out. Lawrence, knowing that his boy Harry (Bobby Connelly) is there, rushes into the building and loses his life, never knowing that his son had already been rescued. With Lawrence out of the way, Muriel and Payne reconcile and Barbara finds a happier life with Schuyler. This picture was adapted from the play by William J. Hurlbut.
