Synopsis by Hal Erickson

The presence in the cast of Lionel Barrymore and Alan Hale Sr. was probably the only interesting aspect of the 4-reel Biograph time-killer The Woman in Black. A prominent contractor finds himself beholden to an unscrupulous politician. The latter has designs on the contractor's pretty daughter, and it looks as though a forced marriage is in the offing. But the Woman in Black -- actually a gypsy maiden who years earlier had been seduced and deserted by the politician -- shows up just in time to spare the heroine from becoming the politician's wife. The trade magazine Variety felt that the storyline was "a bit risque," and that the film lacked star power (with a Barrymore in the cast???)
