Synopsis by Mark Deming
Filmmaker Andrew Cheng offers a glimpse of the changing face of modern China with this collection of vignettes which run the gamut from stark realism to computer-generated fantasy landscapes as they explore Shanghai in the 21st Century, focusing, in particular, on the nuts and bolts of the city's sex trade. Potential male prostitutes are recruited and women perform in elaborate sexual freak shows while customers display as keen an interest in their fellow clients as they do in satisfying their own desires. Mudidi Shanghai was screened in competition at the 2003 Rotterdam Film Festival, where it was awarded the Fipresci Prize.
