Synopsis by Nathan Southern
Though seldom misunderstood thanks to a prevalence of stereotypes, the Amish receive a detailed and accurate sociocultural assessment in this documentary. A group now inhabiting 25 states across the U.S., with a population that doubles every 20 years or so, the Amish represent a bastion of peace and pacifism in the midst of an increasingly bellicose and war-torn America. This program carries audiences into the Amish community, where Amish residents talk candidly (in interviews) about their lives, and demonstrate various facets of their existence, from baking via wood-burning stoves to cleaning apparel with horsepower. The film also incorporates trips into Amish homes and recreations of historical Amish dwellings.
