Synopsis by Mark Deming

Jonathan Harris and Sep Kamvar created this interactive digital art project which puts a new and fascinating perspective on the phenomenon of blogging. For We Feel Fine, Harris and Kamvar created software that constantly scans tens of thousands of weblogs from around the world and looks for instances of the phrases "I Feel" or "I Am Feeling." A special applet then allows users to look at the results in a variety of different ways. "Madness" reduces each sentence with "I Feel" or "I Am Feeling" to a tiny colored dot that swarms across the screen and can opened and read with the click of a mouse. "Murmurs" selects statements at random and presents them as a constant scroll of sentences that appear and fade away moments later. "Montage" combines each statement with an image from the blog, and a mosaic of the images appears on screen, waiting to be opened and read. "Mobs" allows users to read statements one at a time as the program breaks down demographic information about the blogs being sampled at the moment. And "Metrics" shows how often certain words appear in the various posts being analyzed. While We Feel Fine can be experienced on line at www.wefeelfine.org, a special version was presented as an installation at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival as part of the "New Frontiers On Main" program.
