Synopsis by Robert Firsching
This entertaining musical from director Jesus Franco is set at the end of France's silent-film period. Recording star Mikaela Wood portrays Dora, a vampy starlet who falls for Tony (Yves Massard), a set musician. Tony's friend Daniel (Antonio Ozores) is in love with an unemployed circus performer named Carolina (Lina Morgan), so Tony finds the young woman a job. After various romantic intrigues and glamorous set-pieces, the quartet find themselves out of work when the talking picture replaces the silent. Eventually, they go in blackface to impersonate a jazz band at a ritzy casino, leading to unforeseen complications. Franco's film offers a good deal of fun, as well as some interesting Spanish cover versions of hit French songs by Charles Trenet, including "Menilmontant" and "Tu Mano en Mi Mano." Juan Riquelme, Antonio J. Escribano, and Mari Tere Penella co-star, while Antonio Garisa appears as Dora's publicity-hungry manager. Cult filmmaker Rafael Romero Marchent served as assistant director.
