(1972)3.5Robert FirschingOne of the better pinku eiga films of its time, this Nikkatsu production from future action specialist Toru Murakawa was the director's debut, and was so well received for a sex film that it cemented expectations which he was hard-pressed to fulfill throughout his career. Hiroko Isayama stars as an alienated female pickpocket who goes from one affair to the next in the bleak urban jungle where she dwells. As in much similar contemporary Japanese softcore, sex -- while the nominal centerpiece -- is depersonalized and used as a tool to express societal malaise, as in the French nouvelle vague films which Murakawa often apes. Nevertheless, the bathtub orgy sequence in this film became one of the most talked-about scenes of its day. Ichiro Araki and Hajime Tanimoto co-star.
