Even though her career at Fox began first, Valeska Suratt found herself in the position of second string vamp to Theda Bara's lead. Suratt had been taking a brief respite from out-and-out wicked roles when her studio set her in this complicated melodrama. Here, as Vivian Courtney (aka Cherry Millard), Suratt is as evil as they come. Her wanton ways send one man to jail before she heads out West to become a gin-besotted dancehall woman. She finds out about an inheritance due to one of the prospectors, and she sets out to snare him and his money. She comes close to her goal before the inevitable end, in which she must die for her sins. This was a solid program feature, but didn't compare to most of competitor Bara's vamp work.
