Those dopey dopers Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong hit the road in an unending quest for "good grass". Luck of luck, they find themselves driving a van constructed of Fiberweed, a substance that turns out to be pure marijuana. The rest of the picaresque plot concerns Cheech and Chong's efforts to establish themselves as rock stars, and to stay one jump ahead of the law. Much of the script is (excuse the pun) a rehash of C&C's best comedy-record bits, including the immortal "Sister Mary Elephant". Somehow, the endearing (and R-rated) daffiness of Up in Smoke managed to attract as many "straight" filmgoers as dopeheads, and the picture, which cost next to nothing to make, grossed a fortune. The success of Up in Smoke spawned a series of follow-ups, none of which were up to the none-too-exacting standards of the original.
