Synopsis by Mark Deming

Filmmakers Paul Raphael and Felix Lajeunesse directed this visually striking meditation on Inuit cultural traditions. Combining live action and digital animation, Tungijuq contemplates the role of seal hunting in the Inuit community, with a woman representing the spirit that lurks within the seal and how its soul lives on after the hunt to sustain the people who eat its flesh. Tungijuq stars Tanya Tagaq Gillis, a musician whose work combines Inuit throat singing with contemporary jazz; she also composed the film's original score. Tungijuq was an official selection at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, and was an award-winner at the 2009 ImagineNATIVE Film Fest.
