Synopsis by Sandra Brennan
In this South African documentary, Afrikaners give their opinions on democracy. This is especially relevant as it comes just before the South African elections. To find people to interview, it follows the route taken by the Boers on their "Great Trek" of 1938. Included are many clips from a 1916 silent epic that recreated the struggles of the "Voortrekkers" who desired to establish a Boer republic, but had to fight the Zulus for their land. On this historical trail, the filmmakers stop in various towns and small farms to get the local opinions about the political situation. The opinions vary widely. Many Boers still dream of a separate Afrikaner republic.
