Some grace notes from legendary leads Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas aren't enough to salvage this paint-by-numbers fish-out-of-water comedy from the '80s scrapheap. Borrowing liberally from the delicate, ironic Richard Farnsworth vehicle The Grey Fox, Tough Guys opts for a contemporary setting, and the countless jokes involving frozen yogurt, meek parole officers, and "modern" sexuality haven't stood the test of time. Lancaster has to carry the brunt of the picture's dignity, but it's clear that screenwriters James Orr and Jim Cruickshank are far more interested in the randy Kirk Douglas character and his affair with -- yet another '80s stereotype -- an aerobics instructor.
