Joe is a teenager who has lost both of his parents and survives on the streets by committing petty crimes and fighting the other urchins of the street when he has to. One day, Danpei, a homeless, alcoholic ex-boxer takes notice of the boy's skills and inspires Joe to explore his talent as a boxer. Soon afterward, however, Joe's thievery lands him in a juvenile home, where he meets a mean-spirited rival named Rikiishi. Now Joe is training with Danpei to defeat Rikiishi and maybe even box his way out of life on the street, but with Danpei's history as a drunk standing in the way of him obtaining an official boxing license, it looks unlikely that both of them can escape their lives of longing.
