The 4-reel Excelsior production Toll of Mammon was written and directed by Harry Handworth, with Handworth's wife Octavia in the leading role. The film was an extension of the "Fresh Air Fund" one-reelers of a few years earlier, and also of the "exploitation" cycle sparked by Universal's Traffic in Souls. The scourge of tuberculosis was particularly strong among the very poor in 1914; on this score, the film is 100% accurate. But when writer-director Handworth suggests that the only solution to this scourge is a combination of fresh air, fresh milk and exercise, he falls somewhat short of the mark. Except for an exciting runaway-motorboat climax, Toll of Mammon was as dull and dreary as its title.
