Synopsis by Hal Erickson
The old "mortgage on the farm" bit is the catalyst which sets To the Highest Bidder in motion. Unable to pay the aforementioned mortgage, heroine Barbara (Alice Joyce) and her kid brother Jimmy are threatened with eviction by landlord Sidney Jarvis (Percy Standing). Resisting Jarvis' offer to forget about the mortgage if she will marry him, Barbara auctions off her services as a housekeeper, hoping thereby to raise the necessary funds. The two highest bidders are Jarvis (of course) and Barbara's former sweetheart David Whitcomb (Walter McGrail), freshly returned from the Big City. Much to Barbara's relief, Whitcomb "wins" her, but her joy turns to sorrow when, in an astounding reversal of cliché, Whitcomb turns out to be a black-hearted bounder and Jarvis emerges as the hero of the piece!
