Review by Craig Butler

Jerry Lewis aficionados are the only real audience for Three on the Couch, a comedy that any but the most devoted fans will find tediously unamusing and frequently irritating. Four writers share credits for the story and screenplay, and it's amazing that any quartet could create something as inept and embarrassing as Couch -- especially when one of those writers is Samuel A. Taylor, who certainly demonstrated significant talent on some of his previous projects. The very premise -- that Lewis' character would pose as the love interests of three man-hating women in order to cure them and thereby free his psychiatrist fiancé for a honeymoon - is ridiculous, but the bigger problem is that this ridiculous premise is not given a commensurately ridiculous treatment. Instead, it's used as the springboard for some very conventional gags and riffs, few of which are worthwhile on their own and even fewer of which "land" in the context of this particular film. Lewis indulges his penchant for multiple personalities, which in carefully prepared and handled circumstances can be funny, but which here come across as lame and clichéd. Janet Leigh does reasonably well with her part, but the trio of actresses who portray her patients are poor.
