Synopsis by Nathan Southern

One of many efforts to recount the tumultuous events of the 1956 Hungarian revolution against the Soviets in narrative feature form, György Szomjas's The Sun Street Boys takes a unique approach to its subject. It does so by filtering the revolution through the lens of a small social clique's highly personal experiences, and adding visual and aural pyrotechnics to the cinematic treatment of the material. Kata Gaspar stars as Juli, a Hungarian ticket inspector torn between the affections of two local men: beau Laci "Totya" Toth (Sandor Czeczo) and the smitten Gabor "Mouthy" Revecz (Peter Barnai) in the late 1950s. When news arrives that Russian military units are en route to Hungary, the three head to the nearest city, pilfer an illegal cache of guns and Molotov cocktails, and occupy a cinema in preparation for the Russian arrival, weapons-in-hand. The three would-be soldiers have little trouble defending the facility against the first round of invaders, but can scarcely foresee the difficulty that lies ahead. Szomjas co-authored the script with Gabor Heller and Akos Kertesz.
