Adapted from a play by Porter Emerson Browne, Spendthrift starred Irene Fenwick as the improvident title character. Put in charge of the family budget, Fenwick so bollixes up the job that she nearly reduces her stockbroker husband to begging in the streets. She is rescued by an old family friend, who lends her enough money to make good her debts. Her husband misunderstands the platonic relationship between his wife and her benefactor, whereupon he tells her to pack up and get out. Forced to work in a sweatshop, Fenwick finally picks up some financial smarts; thus, when her husband comes around to beg for forgiveness, he is delighted to find that his wife has finally learned how to handle money like a grownup. The 1936 Henry Fonda vehicle Spendthrift was not a remake.
