Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Raised in a convent, pretty young heiress Mara (Josephine Boro) has been slated from birth to wed Russian officer Ivan Orloff (Lowell Sherman). Though she doesn't know much about men, Mara does know that she isn't fond of Orloff, and she begins formulating plans to avoid her wedding. She escapes in the company of Orloff's adjutant Petroff (Robert Frazer) then disappears completely from view. All evidence points to the "fact" that Mara has been killed in an accident, and that Petroff was responsible for her death. But during Petroff's trial, Mara steps forth to exonerate him. The enraged Orloff challenges Petroff to a duel, which brings the story to a sudden and unexpected finale (unexpected, that is, to anyone who hadn't seen the John Gilbert-Greta Garbo vehicle Flesh and the Devil).
