Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka
Two roommates from different backgrounds each head toward their own destinies after graduation; Rose (Chen Pei-hsi) goes to work in a low-class bar while Su-mei (Tai Liang-shun) jets off to take up studies in the United States. Rose meets a personable executive in the bar and the two end up planning to marry, though not everything goes well because his parents are against the match. When Rose and her lover start to argue in a car over his canceling their engagement, their fight causes a crash -- he is killed and she is badly hurt. Although the timing could have been better, Su-mei shows up at this point with her own fiancé, a doctor, to wish Rose well and commiserate. After the accident, Rose acquires a grim determination to get rich at any cost, and so she begins a career as a model that leads to success and a try at a beauty pageant, which she wins. But can these triumphs be enough -- and how much money is enough?
