The Lure was the ninth of twelve films directed in 1914 by pioneering female filmmaker Alice Guy Blache. Based on a play by George Scarborough, the film was a Traffic in Souls-like affair, endeavoring to expose and eradicate the White Slavery racket in the U.S. Once again, a virginal young girl is dragooned into a life of prostitution by a glib city slicker. Once again, the "Mister Big" of the white-slave ring is a supposedly incorruptible politician. And once again, the heroine is saved and the criminals vanquished by a straight-arrow Secret Service man. A thrilling auto-and-train chase in the final reel lifts this one out of the ordinary.
