synopsis
Robert Benton wrote and directed this delightful tribute to the private eye genre of the 1940s. Art Carney plays Ira Wells, an aging private eye, whose partner Harry Regan (Howard Duff) is mysteriously murdered while trying to find client Margo Sperling's (Lily Tomlin) missing cat. Ira vows to find the killer of his friend and partner. Margo, who still wants to find her cat, pairs up with Ira as they both travels through the underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles to find the killer and the kidnapper --experiencing an array of murders, stolen stamps, and sexy broads.
