Synopsis by Mark Deming

An ordinary man's struggle for justice leads him into dangerous territory in this drama. Kaywan (Ali Zabihi) is a Kurdish man from Iran who is severely injured during a skirmish in the fighting between Iraq and his homeland. Shortly after Kaywan is hurt, Saddam Hussein's regime finally collapses when the leader is found after months in hiding, and a new Iraqi government is said to be just around the corner. Kaywan sees the devastation around him and believes something should be done, so be begins a petition drive in which he and the others signers demand that the new Iraqi leadership recognize their crimes against his fellow Kurds, and that Iranians should be compensated for their suffering. As Kaywan travels through Iran drumming up support for his one-man campaign, he encounters Galavish (Shaboo Soleymani), a woman from Iraq who has parted ways with her husband and wants to return home with her young daughter. However, both nature and the new and unstable government in Iraq conspire to keep her out, even as Kaywan steps forward to help. Welate Efsane (aka The Land of Legends) was the first feature film from writer and director Rahim Zabihi.
