John Patrick Shanley wrote this befuddled comedy thriller about an ex-cop brought back on the force to track down a serial killer. A murderer has been terrorizing New York City and Mayor Eamon Flynn (Rod Steiger) is foaming at the mouth, demanding the killings be stopped. The mayor's assistant Frank Starkey (Harvey Keitel) reluctantly puts in a call to his brother Nick (Kevin Kline), a brilliant but unconventional cop who was kicked off the force and has become a fireman. Nick agrees to return and investigate the case in return for a date with Frank's wife Christine (Susan Sarandon), whom Nick has always loved. Back on the force, Nick determines that the serial killer kills every month on a date that is a square root, and that he always strikes in high rise apartments. While Nick reveals the results of his analysis to the mayor, he sets his eyes on the mayor's lovely daughter Bernadette (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) and the sparks begin to fly.
