synopsis
This is the longer (190 minutes) Swedish original version of the film released in the United States as The Emigrants, which is 42 minutes shorter and still considered too long by some filmgoers. What is memorable in both versions is the contrast between the physical beauty of their surroundings and the grinding poverty of these beleaguered Swedes. The English language version was a huge success, as this Swedish one was not. Curiously, the Swedish characters in the English version had their parts dubbed in English with heavy Swedish accents.
