Synopsis by Mark Deming

Auma Obama was born and raised in Kenya, raised by a nurturing mother and a father who was stern and sometimes difficult but supported the family and encouraged his children to make something of themselves. Auma's father would later leave her mother and marry another woman whose son would share his father's name -- Barack Obama. While the future American president and his half-sister lead very different lives, they share a drive and ambition that has encouraged them to make the most of their opportunities, and like Barack, Auma has a history of political activism and academic achievement despite growing up with few economic resources. Filmmaker Branwen Okpako profiles Auma and explores her unusual life and times in the documentary The Education of Auma Obama, which includes footage of Auma meeting her illustrious half-brother, and her family watching the American election returns on November 5, 2008. The film received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
