Synopsis by Mark Deming

There's more at stake than just failed crops when a drought strikes a rural community in this comedy-drama from India. Kisna (Girish Kulkarni) runs a small family farm in a village that's been without rain for weeks. The dry spell has gotten so bad that a number of farmers, knowing their crops will fail, have killed themselves rather than face financial ruin, and Alka (Sonali Kulkarni), Kisna's wife, fears that he may follow the same desperate path if the weather doesn't improve. Alka secretly puts Kisna on constant watch, with her son Dinu (Aman Attar) and his mother (Jyoti Subhash) keeping an eye peeled for any suspicious behavior on his part. As the dry spell wears on, Kisna's budget is stretched to the breaking point, and he can no longer buy seed; Alka gives him her jewelry to pawn, and he plants cotton in hopes that rain will come. However, the clouds refuse to cooperate, and after Kisna's crops die in the field, he and his wife both wonder what will become of them and their fellow farmers. Gabhricha Paus (aka The Damned Rain) was an official selection at the 2009 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
