The Bermondsey Kid was one of a steady flow of "quota quickies" emanating from Britain's Twickenham Studios under a contractual obligation to Hollywood's Warner Bros. Were it not for the thick regional British dialects, the film could pass as one of Warners' James Cagney programmers. Esmond Knight plays a newsboy who yearns to be a champion boxer. Alas, the surest way to the top is for Knight to beat his best pal Ellis Irving in the ring. W. Scott Darling, a Hollywood hack whose career went back to silent 2-reel comedies, patched together the derivative screenplay for The Bermondsey Kid; the leading lady was Pat Paterson, who later married Charles Boyer.
