Though primarily known as a British musical comedy star, Jack Buchanan also appeared in a handful of silent films. One of the best of these was 1923's The Audacious Mr. Squire, adapted from a play by Syndey Bowcett. The dapper Buchanan finds himself the central figure in a snowballing comedy of errors, predicated upon the old mistaken-identity ploy. Everything is straightened out at fadeout time, with our hero claiming lovely heroine Valia as a sort of reward for services rendered. If the name "Jack Buchanan" is unfamiliar to you, here's a hint: he's the Orson Welles-like theatrical entrepreneur in the 1953 Fred Astaire muscal The Band Wagon.
