In this children's story based on a novel written by director Torgny Anderberg, Nino (Carlos Lopez), a ten year old orphan in Ecuador, finds the strict regime at the Catholic boarding school and orphanage where he lives much to difficult to bear. He cannot forget that everyone tells him that his parents are in heaven, and everyone knows that the Ecuadorian city of Quito is very near to heaven also. In hopes of finding them, he runs away, accompanied by his dog. Among the kindly people who befriend him is an old hobo, played by James Coburn. He is being chased by the old priest who runs the orphanage, the police, and several other frightening sorts, but everything turns out for the best by the end of the film.
