Synopsis by Bhob Stewart
Set during the 1948 communist takeover of Czechoslovakia, this Slovakian-German-Czech drama begins as bureaucrats clean up the Bratislava red-light district, with the women taken to a camp, stripped and disinfected. The group (including a love-starved young woman, a masseuse, an exotic dancer, and the brothel's madam) find themselves caught between a sadistic party-line deputy, a sympathetic camp commandant, and a cynical Jewish doctor. Anton Balaz' screenplay is based on his own novel. Shown at the 1998 Berlin Film Festival.
